What are alternative ways of Open Access publishing?
The University Library has made agreements with several publishers in order to render publication processes more efficient and to reduce publication costs for university members. Below, you can find current DEAL agreements as well as a list of publishers the University Library has agreements with.
What kind of financial support is offered?

- Discounted invoice is sent to the University Library

Invoices are sent directly to the University Library. For articles that are to be covered by authors from other institutions, correct classification must be ensured and the University Library must be informed in a timely manner. Should you wish to make use of financial support from the Publication Fund, please fill out the corresponding request form Please make sure to thoroughly check the funding criteria to ensure a successful application. If the application is not approved, you will receive an invoice from the respective Dean's Office for the publication fees.
DEAL Agreements
Nature and Nature-branded
The University of Potsdam is participating in a transformative agreement for Nature and Nature-branded journals. The Nature Publish and Read Framework Agreement including a journal list is publicly available (https://doi.org/10.17617/2.3263806). Since July 2021, it enables authors affiliated with the University of Potsdam to publish their research articles accepted for publication in Nature and Nature-branded research journals immediately Open Access at no cost to them. This does not apply to gold open access journals such as Nature Communications (see also the DEAL agreement with Springer Nature). The University of Potsdam also has read access to the complete Nature portfolio, including Nature Review titles and all forthcoming Nature-branded journals.

Springer Nature
Since April 2020, the University of Potsdam has had a DEAL contract with the publisher Springer Nature. This provides permanent access to the current volumes of all approximately 1,900 journals (including Springer Medical, Palgrave, Adis and Macmillan Academic) during the contract period, also applying retroactively up to the publication year 1997.
Since January 1, 2020, all corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam and, if applicable, from associated institutions can publish open access in Springer Nature subscription-only (hybrid) journals. The reference date is the time of online publication of the respective article. The corresponding publication costs are included in the total fees to be paid to the publisher by the University Library. When submitting your articles, please make sure that you enter the correct affiliation. If this is not indicated correctly, there may be administrative delays in the attribution of the work to the University of Potsdam.
From August 1, 2020 on, corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam and, if applicable, from associated institutions will be able to publish in Springer Nature's roughly 600 open access journals (including Scientific Reports and Nature Communications). The resulting publication costs are invoiced centrally to the University of Potsdam.
If funding through the publication fund is possible, we ask that the corresponding application is submitted immediately after acceptance of the submitted manuscript. Costs in excess of the partial grant will be invoiced to the author through the University Library.
Current list of Springer Nature journals that are part of the contract
Contract period: 5 years (2024–2028)
Wiley
Since April 2019, the University of Potsdam has been participating in the DEAL contract with the publisher Wiley. This makes it possible to access roughly 1,700 journals retroactively up to the publication year 1997.
Since January 22, 2019, all corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam and, if applicable, from associated institutions can publish in Wiley's gold open access journals at a 20 % discount within the framework of the agreement. The University of Potsdam will be centrally invoiced for the resulting publication costs. If funding is to be provided via the publication fund, we request that the appropriate application be submitted immediately after acceptance of the submitted manuscript.
From July 1, 2019 on, all corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam and, if applicable, from associated institutions can publish open access in subscription-only (hybrid) Wiley journals. The corresponding publication costs are included in the total fees to be paid to the publisher by the University Library. Thus, there are no additional costs for you. An exception may be publications with the American Geophysical Union (AGU), which may charge additional excess page fees.
When submitting your articles, please make sure that you enter the correct affiliation. In case of doubt, the attribution to the University of Potsdam is verified by the University Library as part of the publication process.

Publishing Agreements
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
Since 2018, all corresponding authors at the University of Potsdam who publish in the journal Science Advances will be granted a 15 % discount on article processing charges as part of a consortium agreement with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). American Chemical Society (ACS)
As part of a consortial agreement, the University of Potsdam participates in the American Chemical Society's (ACS) Read & Publish Program. This enables corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam to publish their articles open access in all ACS journals (fully and hybrid) with a CC BY 4.0 license free of charge. The agreement also allows our scholars to read all ACS journals.

Association for Computing (ACM)
The University of Postdam has continued it transformative agreement with the publisher ACM on a consortial basis. This enables access toall journals and proceedings on the ACM Digital Library platform.
Through ACM Open all corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam and associated institutions, including the Hasso-Plattner-Institute, can publish their articles Open Access. Publication costs are covered by the total costs paid to the publisher by the University Library.
When submitting your articles, please make sure that you enter the correct affiliation and ideally use your university or HPI email address. When in doubt, University of Potsdam scholar's affiliations will be verified by the University Library as part of the publishing workflow.
The publisher ACM has reiterated its intention to transition its publications to a sustainable and 100 % Open Access publishing model by 2026.

Astronomy & Astrophysics (EDP Sciences)
Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) is published under Subscribe-to-Open (S2O). Since 2022, with the support of A&A subscribers, articles are published Open Access under a CC-BY 4.0 license. The University of Potsdam is a current subscriber of A&A.
As a corresponding author affiliated with the University of Potsdam (or any other German academic institution) you can publish in A&A at a 20 % discounted APC price.
BioMed Central (BMC) - terminated
Potsdam University Library has had a so-called prepaid membership with BioMed Central (BMC) since 2003. Since July 2020, BMC is part of the DEAL agreement with Springer Nature.
Cambridge University Press (CUP)
With a Publish&Read model on current journals, Potsdam University Library participates in the alliance license with Cambridge University Press (CUP). This is a multidisciplinary journal package that includes 404 titles in the total portfolio, of which 44 journals are published in gold open access and more than 330 journals that offer a hybrid publishing option.
All corresponding authors of the University of Potsdam are entitled to publish in the CUP journals with publication option in open access without any restrictions. There are no additional costs for authors. The publisher only charges for color illustrations if these are requested by the author for the print version. No page charges are levied for open access publications. In addition to Research Articles, Review Articles and Rapid Communications, Brief Reports as well as Case Reports are also considered as article types. Articles are made open access immediately upon publication under a CC-BY license, unless the author prefers a different license.
CUP intends to transform a substantial part of its subscription journals to gold open access by 2025.

COGITATIO
Since October 2018, the Potsdam University Library has had a publishing agreement with COGITATIO. To streamline processes, invoices for open access publications with COGITATIO are submitted to the University Library. These rules apply to corresponding authors who are members of the University of Potsdam. An APC discount of 20 % is granted; a reimbursement of the costs can be applied for via the publication fund of the University of Potsdam.
Company of Biologists
The University of Potsdam participates in a read and publish licence agreement with the Company of Biologists. That enables all corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam to publish research articles Open Access immediately with a CC BY 4.0 Licence with no additional fees. Scholars may choose between hybrid subscription journals (Development; Journal of Cell Science; Journal of Experimental Biology) or gold open access journals (Disease Models & Mechanisms; Biology Open). Participation also includes reading access to these journals.

Copernicus
The Potsdam University Library has had a publishing agreement with Copernicus since 2015. When submitting their articles, corresponding authors have the option to select the “University of Potsdam” as their primary affiliation and thereby enable central invoicing through the University Library.
De Gruyter
The University of Potsdam participates in an open access transformational agreement with De Gruyter for its entire Humanities and Social Sciences portfolio (HSS). The portfolio is divided into convolut A and convolut B. Corresponding Authors from the University of Potsdam may published their articles in journals in convolut A open access and without additional fees; this is not possible for articles published in journals in convolut B. Scholars may read all content from journals across their entire porfolio. De Gruyteris responsible for identifying eligible publications and authors.
In addition, authors from the University of Potsdam receive a 20 % discount on the list prices for De Gruyter's gold open access APCs.
De Gruyter is also expanding its "Subscribe to Open" offerings. Here, existing subscriptions are continued, thus enabling the annual open access transformation of journals. Publication fees are not charged to authors.

List of journals from convolut A
Frontiers
The University of Potsdam has been participating in a consortium agreement with Frontiers since March 2024, which entails unlimited publishing and considerable administrative simplifications. All articles submitted are covered by this agreement and are subject to a 10 % discount on article processing charges (APCs). APCs exceeding EUR 2,000 (net) will be invoiced internally to the corresponding authors in accordance with the funding criteria of the publication fund.
Hogrefe
The University of Potsdam has extended its participation in the open access transformational framework agreement for PsyJOURNALS with Hogrefe, which has been in place since 2021. Members of the University of Potsdam can publish open access in subscription-based journals free of charge. Scholars also receive a 25 % discount off of APCs in the publisher's gold open access journals. As usual, authors submit their manuscript directly to the journal as corresponding author or submitting author. More information is available at https://www.hogrefe.com/eu/service/for-authors.

Institute of Physics (IOP)
The Institutional Research License (Read and Publish) allows authors of the University of Potsdam to publish free of charge, without embargo period and under CC BY 4.0 license in 53 hybrid journals and 21 gold open access journals of IOP. As a corresponding author or submitting author you may submit your article directly to the journal as usual. The assignment is made via your University of Potsdam email address.

Lyell Collection / Geological Society of London - terminated
Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI)
The University Library has signed an institutional membership agreement with the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). Corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam can save 10 % of the publication costs.
Oxford University Press (OUP)
The University of Potsdam entered a Read and Publish agreement with Oxford University Press in 2024. This argreement allows all corresponding authors of the University of Potsdam unlimited open access publishing in all of the publisher's journals (gold and hybrid). Publication costs are already covered by participation in this agreement.
A further component of the contract is full reading access to all Oxford University Press journals.

Public Library of Science (PLoS)
Since 2015, the Potsdam University Library has had a publishing agreement with PLoS. To streamline processes, invoices for open access publications in PLoS go to the University Library. These rules apply to corresponding authors who are members of the University of Potsdam.
Rockefeller University Press
The University of Potsdam participates in a Read & Publish Agreement with Rockefeller University Press. This enables corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam to publish journal articles directly, unlimited and free of charge in open access and under CC BY 4.0 license. Articles can be published in the publisher's three biomedical journals: Journal of Cell Biology (JCB), Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM) and Journal of General Physiology (JGP). Participation also includes reading access to these journals.

Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
Beginning in 2024, the University of Potsdam is participating in the consortial pilot program RSC Platinum. This allows corresponding authors from the University of Potsdam unlimited and free open access publishing in all gold and hybrid journals of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) under CC BY 4.0 license. Participation also includes read access to all journals.
RSC has set itself the goal of publishing all RSC-owned journals fully Open Access from 2028. This means, as part of a renewal of the model, all content will be fully open access and the authors of participating institutions will be able to publish without additional fees.

Taylor & Francis (T&F)
The University of Potsdam has been participating in an Open Access transformation agreement with Taylor & Francis (T&F) since 2024. UP corresponding authors can publish articles open access in all Taylor & Francis Open Select Journals (hybrid) without additional costs. No additional service fees are charged (e.g. color or page charges).
Open Access publication is not limited to journals for which the institution holds reading and usage rights; eligible authors can publish open access in all 2,000+ Taylor & Francis Open Select journals. All types of research articles can be published under a CC-BY license.
As before, members of the University of Potsdam can read all journals belonging to the Science & Technology Library (ST) and the Social Science & Humanities Library (SSH).
UP-Corresponding authors receive a 15 % discount on the APC list prices for publication in fully open access journals.
